The substantial village of North Ferriby, with a population of 3,819 as at the 2001 census, sits on the north bank of the Humber about seven miles to the west of Hull. These days it is a pleasant dormitory village for people working in Hull, and because of the excellent links to the M62 and the railway network (with its own station on the lines between Hull and both York and Sheffield) for those employed much further away than that. The name Ferriby is of Danish origin, denoting a settlement with a ferry, in this case linking the village with its partial namesake South Ferriby on the other side of the Humber. But the place’s links with boats go back far earlier than the Norse incomers of the late 9th century. In 1937 local archaeologists found the remains of a Bronze Age boat, and further boat finds were turned up on subsequent occasions. The Ferriby boats have been carbon dated to around 2000BC, making them the oldest boats yet discovered in Europe. And these were not small craft, albeit they were of a shallow draft, but lengthy vessels to be powered by perhaps ten or a dozen crewmen. The Humber Bridge, just a short and scenic walk along the banks of the Humber, has removed the need for a ferry, but the sight of that magnificent structure should be reward for its loss. There are good facilities in the village, in what is a prosperous area: various shops, the parish church of All Saints’; a school; and two pubs, the Swan Cygnet and Duke of Cumberland. The most famous building there though was the Priory built in the village by the Knights Templar at the end of the 12th century, said to have been a magnificent structure. The priory fell into disuse after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monastic orders and seizure of their property.
