The Wolds village of Nafferton is quite a substantial one, its population according to the2001 census 2,184. This population, plus of course visitors, supports excellent amenities: a small school; chippie; post office, supermarket; and four pubs. The village sits just to the south of the A614 road between Driffield just a couple of miles to the south west, and Bridlington rather further away to the north east, and is also easily accessible by rail, having its own station on the line that winds between Hull and Scarborough. The village is a very pleasant one, with a variety of 18th century houses and cottages giving the place real charm, and new build that has brought growth and some new life to the area. There are two sites in the village that add hugely to its charm: the mere and All Saints’ Church. The mere, in the centre of the settlement, was once a mill lodge or pond, and though it is not in practical use these days it still provides a pleasant backdrop to village activities. All Saints’ Church is a typical Norman design in the perpendicular style. Once in the gift of the powerful Percy family, it was ceded to the Convent of Meaux in 1304. The village itself certainly predates the Norman era, its name being Norse in origin, originally denoting this was where one Nattfari had his farmstead. With Bridlington, Flamborough and Filey all within easy striking distance by car and by train, Nafferton makes a good base for exploring the coast as well as the gentle countryside of the Wolds. There are plenty of tings to visit near the village: the lovely Burton Agnes Hall is only three or four miles distant; Driffield Canal, a good place for spotting aquatic wildlife, is only two miles south; and the fascinating Rudston Monolith, the tallest standing stone in Britain, is just a quiet drive north through the back lanes.
