The Yorkshire Wolds village of Little Weighton, in the wider parish of Rowley, sits well away from the main roads crossing the area, but is still within easy reach of Hull, about 10 miles to the south east, and Beverley a little closer north east. The name Weighton is said to mean a farmstead near willows, and this is agricultural country, the flat and green lands of the Wolds occasionally crossed by valleys cut deep in the chalky ground by the melt-waters at the end of the last ice age. The parish church, named for St Peter, dates from 1150, with of course many alterations made over the years, especially in the 18th century. It stands in the grounds of a country house hotel, Rowley Manor, which was once its rectory, but now opens its elegant Georgian doors to guests. The previous rectory building belonged to one of the Pilgrim Fathers, Ezekiel Rogers. Grinling Gibbons made the fine panels in the study of the manor. With its church, primary school, a little shop, and the Black Bull pub, Little Weighton has the elements needed to service the community of just over 1,000 inhabitants. There is also a rather quaint Methodist church in the village, rather more restrained than St Peter’s, but still in keeping with its surroundings.
