With a population of 17,263 at the last census, it might be expected that Cottingham would be a market town, but though there is a market this is the largest village in the country (or at least claims to be – others dispute the title). The market is held on the village green every Thursday, continuing a tradition dating back at least to 1200, when King John granted the settlement permission to hold markets. Cottingham is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. Perhaps the architectural highlight of the village is the church of St Mary the Virgin, parts of which date from the 13th century, and it has roots before then – a church in the village is mentioned in documents of 1160. This is a solid and yet elegant building, the nave constructed in the Decorated style in 1320 being particularly impressive. Cottingham is just to the north west of Hull, and that city’s university is of great importance to the place. There are several student residences, helping to enliven the entertainment scene in this most substantial village. University staff members have been attracted to the elegant older houses in the place. And one of Hull’s most famous residents, the poet Philip Larkin, is buried in the Victorian cemetery there. Cottingham has two high streets, King Street and Hallgate, which cross one another. Fittingly for a place with such an ancient history allied to a vibrant modern existence, the village can offer accommodation in a country house hotel of the grand old style – Rowley Manor Hotel – and in a super-modern establishment, the Lazaat. And the visitor will be bound to find a pub to his or her taste in Cottingham, with old and new establishments seemingly on every street in the centre.
