Burton Agnes is a quiet village with fewer than 1000 residents, midway between Driffield and Bridlington on the A614 thus in the Yorkshire Wolds, the fine cliffs and beaches of Brid and Flamborough within easy driving distance. An attractive village for its ordinary houses, Burton Agnes also has not one but two great houses to draw visitors: its restored Norman manor house within an 18th century shell; and the magnificent Burton Agnes Hall. The manor house is run by English Heritage. Adjacent to these structures there is a good Norman church, for once overshadowed by lay buildings. The Hall, now owned by a preservation trust, is a wonderful early Jacobean red brick building with an equally elegant gatehouse that has octagonal towers. Its original owner was Sir Henry Griffith. The gardens include fine lawns and old yew trees, and hold the national collection of campanulas, and they are used for imaginative displays of sculpture. The house also holds some very fine artworks including a surprising wealth of French impressionist paintings and pieces by 20th century British artists. Since 2004 the village has held an annual Scarecrow festival which began as a fund-raising activity and has now become a community event.
