The East Yorkshire village of Burstwick is pretty much an out-of-the-way sort of place, not one that visitors are likely to happen upon unless they are on the way to Spurn Head, which sits a few miles to the east. But therein lies some of the charm of the village. Those who do travel to the area could be forgiven for wondering if they have somehow stumbled south over the Humber, given the resemblance of the Holderness countryside to much of East Anglia. Burstwick, with a population of 1,813, is a sizeable village with the amenities needed to maintain a thriving community: it has its primary school, not one but two pubs – the Nag’s Head and the Hare and Hounds - a shop, and even a chippie. And of course it has a church, in this case All Saints, an ancient church which adds to the feeling that this is a corner of East Anglia, looking like many a wool church in Norfolk. The local B&B, Bramhill Country Farmhouse, continues this feel, its elegant Georgian proportions speaking volumes about the prosperous gentleman farmers of yore. Around the village there is plenty to see, including the delightful nearby village of Ottringham, and Keyingham with its lovely old windmills. Perhaps the biggest draw to the area, though, is Spurn Head, with its nature trail and reserve, a landscape that changes from the pleasant and gentle to the rather stranger and more brutal feel of a place at the mercy of the wind and the waves.
