Situated on the north bank of the River Humber, the small town of Brough (its population is in the region of 7,000) is these days best known for its BAe factory and airfield, where planes like the Harrier jump jet have been made over the years. The plant was built at Brough because the nearby river allowed seaplanes to take off and land there. The town’s history goes back a lot further than 1916 though, with Bronze Age finds showing it has been settled for thousands of years. The Celtic tribe the Parisi lived in the area before the Roman invasion, their capital which later had the Latin name Petuaria occupying the same position as present day Brough. The Romans who arrived in about 70AD used the town as a fortress and a river port, and they built roads from the place to York and present-day Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Silting of the river nearby and economic decline meant that the town lost importance, but the aircraft plant in the last century revived its fortunes, though it already had some claims to prosperity, at least by association, with one of Britain’s oldest yacht clubs, The Humber Yawl club, having a base there since the late 19th century, a base with clubhouse and launching facilities that is still around today. Perhaps the greatest claim-to-fame of Brough, and one of which it is proud, is that Dick Turpin, highwayman, murderer and all round bad egg, hid out in the town under an assumed name (and not a very imaginative one either – he used his mother’s maiden name of Palmer) for a couple of years when things had got too hot for him in the South. On the surface he was a respectable livestock dealer, but of course tempted to save costs by stealing his stock. Turpin gave himself away when he drunkenly shot a prize cockerel in 1739, thereby drawing a modicum of attention on himself. Modern Brough is a sought-after dormitory town, with good rail links to Hull, Doncaster, and York and further afield to London, and of course it is only a short drive along the A63 to reach the end and beginning of the M62 at junction 38.
