The pretty seaside resort of Bridlington in East Yorkshire may have declined as a destination for hordes of West Yorkshire factory workers, but for those who enjoy an old fashioned seaside holiday, albeit with some modern touches, it takes some beating. This is a place with a great deal of history behind it: archaeologists have found evidence of Stone Age man making axes here; the Bronze Age Dane’s Dyke, an earthwork fortification, can be found in Flamborough to the north; and the Romans were here too, seen in the Roman coastal road in the area. The Saxons developed the settlement, but when William the Conqueror grabbed the country in 1066 it became a royal possession. King John in 1200 granted a market and annual fair, and Henry VI allowed the town two more fairs, making the place a significant trading point in the region. There are in fact two Bridlingtons, albeit merging in modern times, with the original settlement about the ancient Priory, a short way inland, and Bridlington Quay, where the fishing port and harbour grew up. To add to the confusion, until the 19th century the place was more often than not referred to as Burlington, and some locals still insist on this name. With the fashion for sea-bathing, and the lure of the fresh air to be found at the coast, in the late 18th century Bridlington began to be a leisure resort, gaining its first hotel in 1805. This trade was of huge value to the town in late Victorian times, and on through the 20th century, until cheap package holidays to guaranteed sunshine displaced the British seaside holiday as the annual destination for millions. These days more people are likely to come for short breaks, with a wide variety of attractions to amuse them: the London Eye-style wheel; the lovely beaches; old fashioned cafes and rock shops, and the beauty of nearby Flamborough Head, and of the RSPB nature reserve at Bempton Cliffs; or the simple pleasure of a stroll along the elegant prom-prom-prom.
