The pleasant West Yorkshire town of Shipley to the north of Bradford has far more to offer the visitor than its population of less than 29,000 might suggest. Shipley runs into Bradford these days, but it retains its own identity, and has some special attractions that help create that identity. Not least among those attractions is the Victorian model village of Saltaire, built by Sir Titus Salt to house the workers in his alpaca and wool businesses away from the slums of Bradford. Whether this was a philanthropic gesture or a sound business move is much debated. He allowed no pub so that it would be tougher to unionise, and so that problems of drunkenness and absenteeism would be reduced. But he provided leisure facilities including a concert hall and library that were well in advance of their time. Saltaire is now a world heritage site and a massive draw for visitors. As well as the historical aspect of Saltaire there is a more contemporary one, with the gallery there dedicated to Bradford lad David Hockney. Shipley is on the River Aire and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, and there is a canal waterbus to provide visitors with a treat. A rarer transport treat is in store also in the guise of the Shipley Glen Tramway, built in 1895 to ferry visitors up the steep slope to the Shipley Glen beauty spot. This is the oldest working cable tramway-proper in the country, and the enthusiast’s day will be made with the museum as well as the quarter-mile woodland ride to the top, where a pub and café are within easy striking distance, though the countryside is enough for many. These days Shipley like so many towns in the region has many residents who commute to Leeds, with train stations in Shipley and Saltaire making the journey rather easier than on the busy roads. When the weather permits there is something of a café society feel about parts of the town, and the shopping in both Shipley and Saltaire serves both locals and those making a special trip.
