The West Yorkshire market town of Pudsey, mentioned in the Domesday Book as Podechesai, sits between Leeds and Bradford, and until 1974 when it was incorporated in the Leeds metropolitan district, it retained its independence of both. The town still to this day provides a noticeable break between Leeds and Bradford, a green lung for them thanks in part to the Moravian settlement at Fulneck, one of the villages adjoining Pudsey. The Moravians, who arrived in the area in the mid-18th century, kept their lands free of industrial development. Pudsey itself still has plenty of reminders of its importance as a woollen cloth producing area in the industrial revolution and afterwards, and local business Hainsworths still provides specialist cloths like the British military scarlet tunic wool cloth. In the undeveloped land around the town remnants of packhorse trails unite its rural and industrial pasts. The architecture of the town shows a mixture of workers’ stone cottages and mills, some now converted to flats in keeping with the settlement’s use as a dormitory town for Leeds and Bradford, and a few more elegant Georgian homes built for those who ran and owned the wool businesses. Above all these buildings towers the parish church of St Lawrence. A town of radicals and free traders, Pudsey celebrated the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 by boiling up a giant plum pudding, enjoyed by the entirety of the population. It was made with the combined culinary efforts of twenty local ladies, each producing about 50lb of flour, fruit and suet mixture, the lot boiled for days in a carefully scrubbed dye vessel. More recently the town has a rather more active claim to fame, having nurtured the cricketing talents of Herbert Sutcliffe, Len Hutton, Raymond Illingworth (surely the best England captain in living memory), and Matthew Hoggard.
