West Yorkshire’s Dewsbury is surrounded by the larger settlements of Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and Halifax, but with a population of nearly 55,000 it is a sizeable town in its own right, with a history in keeping. The town’s name is probably derived from Dew meaning stream, and burg, a fort. Dewsbury was of considerable ecclesiastical importance in Saxon times, St Paulinus having preached in the town in 627AD. Paulinus was the first Bishop of York. Dewsbury Minster is said to be sited on the spot by the Calder where he preached, and it was a foundation of some significance, receiving tithes from the surrounding district through the medieval era. In the industrial age Dewsbury was a textile town, its development helped by the link built in 1770 to the Calder and Hebble Navigation, and by the arrival of the railway in 1848. In earlier times woollen cloth was produced in Dewsbury. When the shoddy process was invented it became a centre for the uniform and blanket material made from the combination of recycled and new wool. In the post-industrial age Dewsbury is changing, the town centre being revived and refurbished to show the beauty of the old York-stone buildings, and old mills being converted into stylish apartments for commuters who work in Leeds or further afield in Sheffield and Manchester. With easy access via express-links to the M1 and the M62 Dewsbury is well placed for commuters. The town’s market benefits from the same links bringing people in, with upwards of 400 stalls every Wednesday and Saturday, and its revival was marked in 2007 by the award of the title of Britain’s Best Market.
