The West Yorkshire town of Batley is a sizeable one, its population approaching the 45,000 mark. These days roughly one in three of its inhabitants have their roots in the Indian sub-continent, they or previous generations drawn to the town in the 1950s and subsequent decades by the textile industry. The town probably takes its name from an important local family, the Battes, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Parts of the Parish Church, All Saints, date from the 13th century, though the majority is 15th century. Sadly little or nothing of similar antiquity survived the development of the town in the industrial era. What was still a village-sized settlement at the end of the 18th century became far more important because of the invention by Batley resident Benjamin Shaw of the shoddy process, whereby old woollen cloth could be recycled into coarse material suitable for blankets and uniforms. From a population of fewer than 3,000 in 1800 the town grew to three times that by 1850. The railway came to Batley in 1848, serving what had become a thriving industrial centre. The town’s name for many of us is associated with three things: Batley Variety Club where the likes of Louis Armstrong and Roy Orbison performed; Batley Grammar School, which numbers alumni like Titus Salt of Saltaire fame and discoverer of Oxygen Joseph Priestley; and Batley Bulldogs, the local rugby league side. A great place for visitors to spend time in is Wilton Park, which contains a butterfly house and the Bagshaw Museum housing ancient Egyptian exhibits and local history displays. Batley is also the home of the Yorkshire Motor Museum, with an eclectic collection of vehicles that includes examples of cars made in the region.
