Wallasey is located at the top of the Wirral Peninsula on the mouth of the River Mersey Wallasey is to a certain extent indebted to Liverpool and Birkenhead for the manner in which it has grown. Originally shipbuilding was undertaken at Liverpool but as Liverpool grew in importance and found more profit in docks and bonded warehouses then shipbuilding had to be relocated. Enter William Laird in the early 19th century who set up his world famous shipbuilding works at Birkenhead but he soon required more docks and shipbuilding was shared with Wallasey. The Wallasey docks were constructed between 1842 and 1847 in the Wallasey Pool. Because of the growth of shipbuilding in the area other industries found that it was profitable to be located nearby and soon engineering, sugar refining, the production of cement and fertilizers were all being undertaken close by. Today Wallasey offers its residents a range of good local facilities, close to Wallasey is the M53 motorway providing easy access to the rest of the motorway network, if however you wish to head East then the Wallasey Tunnel takes you into Liverpool and from there the M62 is easily reached. This together with its rail network ensures that you travel to almost anywhere in the country with relative ease. One final thing - if you are a keen golfer then the chances are that at one time you have played a round involving Stableford Points – If this is the case then you are probably indebted to Dr Frank Stableford the inventor of the system a member of Wallasey Golf Club and he first used the system in 1932.
