Kirkby is to be found in the North West of England on the outskirts of the City of Liverpool and can trace its history back to the Norse period, around 900 AD. Very much a rural settlement it wasn’t until the mid 19th century and the coming of the railways that saw a change to the area. Initially the railway had a negative effect on the Kirkby as the local population took advantage of the new travel opportunities and moved away from the area. In short little changed in Kirkby it remained predominantly an agricultural based economy until the 20th century. In 1935 the East Lancashire Road was built uniting by road Manchester and Liverpool and this allowed Kirkby to capitalise on its now important location. In 1939 the government needed a location for a new munitions plant and in 1941 work was completed on the Royal Ordnance Factory and it became a major employer in the area with a workforce at one time of around 20,000 people. After the war the area was taken over by industrialists and soon the Kirkby Industrial Estate as born. Combined with this it was obvious that Liverpool was overcrowded at this time and it fell to Kirkby to provide new homes to remedy the situation and new housing estates were built, just after the war the local population was some 3,000 and by 1961 this had grown to 50,000. Today Kirkby is striving to improve its image, as a village it was a popular place to live and today, despite its recent problems, it is once again becoming a popular location.
