Hoylake is on the Wirral Peninsula in the North West of England and for a short period of its history it enjoyed life as a sea port. Today though it has found fame amongst the golfing fraternity as the occasional home of Open Golf Tournaments for it is here at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course that the tournament is held. Hoylake though offers more than this to both the visitor and resident, as you stroll along the promenade it is hard to imagine that back in the 17th century troops were boarding here at Hoylake for passage to Ireland. Its life as a seaport curtailed in the 19th century as the estuary around Hoylake silted up and fishing became the main trade for the local community which it exploited to the full. The only fishing today though are the occasional anglers from the promenade. With the arrival of better road and rail communications Hoylake began to attract visitors, much as it does today, who come to enjoy the seaside and the splendid views across the River Dee or out towards Lancashire. After a bracing stroll along the seafront there is nothing better than spending some time admiring the Victorian shops fronts along Market Street and seeing what bargains are to be had.
