Bootle is a suburb of the City of Culture for 2008, Liverpool and today to look at it you would think that it has always existed in the shadow of its main city. You would though be wrong because Bootle boasts an interesting history that once saw this town as a seaside resort! Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Bootle was a small village overlooking the clear waters of Bootle Bay and it was these clear waters that first attracted industry to the area. Initially bleaching, tanning and papermaking were all established and thriving in the area and it was a popular resort until the 1800’s. The 19th century saw the importance of trading with the rest of the world grow, manufactured goods from the mills of Manchester and Liverpool were being sold all over the world and in particular to America. It seemed logical then to build the docks for these great ships at Bootle and so Bootle helped Liverpool evolve into the great shipping centre for which it is known throughout the world today. The Second World War and the 20th century industrial decline did the area no favours but with true Liverpool determination the area has worked its way through its problems and instead of the rundown area of the late 20th century Bootle is turning itself around, it has new residential developments, it is attracting new industries to its science parks, its docks are still thriving, it boasts a rejuvenated shopping centre and is within easy reach of Liverpool City Centre.
