Oswestry is a bustling market town situated on the Shropshire/Welsh border. Narrow passageways link streets whose names conjure up images of the past: English Walls, Welsh Walls, The Bailey and The Horsemarket. Hotels and Inns bear witness to the historic importance of Oswestry as a stagecoach and railway centre. The Cambrian Railway had its headquarters in the town, and Oswestry's first school, founded in 1407 is now a Heritage centre, and holds regular exhibitions of arts and crafts.
If you travel from Oswestry you soon encounter picture postcard villages, whose names are a mixture of English and Welsh. You can travel along quiet country roads through the rolling pastureland of the Shropshire plain to the dramatic hill country of Wales. Marvel at the majestic Pistyll Rhaeadr Falls, the highest in England and Wales, or explore the ancient earthworks of Offa's Dyke and the Iron Age Hillfort.
Past border conflict has left the area with a rich legacy of fortifications such as the magnificent Marcher fortress of Chirk Castle, whilst the Llangollen and Montgomery canals offer peace and tranquillity to those seeking a more relaxing holiday. The area is perfect for activity holidays, short breaks or a day visit relaxing in the countryside.
