The town of Bridgnorth is to be found nestling on the banks of the River Severn – well at least part of it is as Bridgnorth is almost two towns in one. There is the Low Town of Bridgnorth along which the River Severn flows and this was once a busy port, the Vikings being amongst the first people to appreciate its unique location around 890AD, at one time Bridgnorth was the largest inland port in Europe. It was the coming of the railways that saw the importance of Bridgnorth fade as a port of substance. The Severn Valley Railway is today still in operation between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster and offers some of the most stunningly picturesque views as it winds its way along the valley from its period rolling stock. Then there is Bridgnorth High Town, some 100 feet above the Low Town, and it is here that you will find its imposing and splendid town hall – a magnificent example of a timber framed building dating back to 1652 and which dominates the town centre. It is said that Charles I once commented that the castle and Castle Walk provided the finest view in all his kingdom. The town of Bridgnorth has plenty to offer the resident and visitor alike, it plays host to a number of music festivals each year, the Haydn Festival in June clebrating the best of classical music, the Bridgnorth Folk Festival encompassing not just folk but also rock and blues, finally there is the recently inaugurated Bridgnorth Jazz Festival which is in October. One more thing about Bridgnorth – how do you get between the Low Town and the High Town ? Well if you are feeling particularly fir you can climb the 200 steps or so between the two, but for a more relaxed way to travel there is the funicular. This is an electrical railway, the only one of its kind in inland England and is a cliff railway. The first time you take it may seem a little disconcerting but it really is a triumph of Victorian engineering and, despite being a short trip, an excellent way to save your legs!
