Educated at Eton College, he travelled widely in his youth and served as a diplomat before inheriting his title 14th Baron Berners. He was a talented artist and writer as well as a skilled musician. His works include Trois Morceaux (1919), Fantasie Espagnole (1919), Fuge in C minor (1924), and several ballets including The Triumph of Neptune (1926) and Luna Park (1930). Film scores include Nicholas Nickleby (1946).
