Wells is a delightfully small city (more a market town really) with a magnificent cathedral and plenty of narrow cobbled streets. The main street is normally packed with shoppers and has a quaint stream running alongside. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants and excellent surrounding countryside.
Wells Cathedral is an architectural delight and stands proudly at one end of the main street. In front is a cobbled area with cramped parking, street sellers and entertainers and cafes which provide excellent vantage points for watching the world go by.
Wells began as a holy place, taking its name from the springs in what are now the Bishop's Palace grounds. The church was built near the wells in 705 and the present cathedral building was begun in 1180
Make no mistake Wells does get busy and is not at all off the beaten track but is served by decent outskirts parking and plenty of amenities. Englands smallest city is well worth a look!
