Montacute is a small Somerset village situated four miles west of Yeovil. It provides easy access to the A303 trunk road, which runs from Basingstoke in Hampshire to Honiton in Devon. The village was originally known as Logaresburch by the Saxons, when the estate was owned by King Harold's royal standard bearer Tofig. It was later renamed Montacute, although opinion seems divided as to the exact origins of the name. One opinion is that the name is derived from the Latin 'Mons Acutus' after a small but particularly steep hill that dominates the village. Some suggest that it is more likely that Robert, Count of Mortain, who built the motte-and-bailey Castle Montacute, probably named it after his colleague Drogo de Montague (Montacute). Montacute is all the more picturesque as the village is mostly built from the local Hamstone. The village also has a fine medieval church. The 'Borough' at the centre of the village is a square which is surrounded by charming cottages and the Phelps Arms public house. A big tourist attraction in the area is Montacute House; one of the finest examples of an Elizabethan House in England. Ham Hill Country Park is also popular with visitors.
