Clevedon is situated along the coastline of the Bristol Channel. The town's origins can be traced back at least to Saxon times, although some findings suggest Celtic settlement. Once a popular Victorian seaside resort it boasts many examples of architecture from that era. Clevedon Pier is the only fully intact, Grade 1 listed pier in the United Kingdom. It was originally constructed in 1867 using surplus material from Brunel's South Wales Railway. It has been beautifully restored and offers a venue for lovely day out by the seaside. With the promenade's spectacular view across the Bristol Channel, it is easy to see how the town grew in popularity during the Victorian era. The vista spans the Severn Estuary, the islands Flat Holm and Steep Holm and provides a view of some of the best sunsets in the West Country. The Clevedon Civic Society is evidence of a thriving community spirit in the area. The Society tries to ensure the provision of many other worthwhile attractions beside the sea-front at Clevedon. Groups were formed under the titles; Conservation and Planning, Footpaths, Local History and Environment. They have made available literature covering the history, landmarks and walkways of this a busy seaside town.
