Bicknoller is a parish in the hundred of Williton and Freemanners, 14 miles North of Taunton. To the north, only a few miles away, lies the Bristol Channel coast whilst to the East is the Exmoor National Park. The village lies in the Quantock Hills, a range of hills to the west of Bridgewater in Somerset. The Quantock Hills are well worth a visit if you are in the area, having been designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' by the countryside agency. From high in the Quantock Hills on a clear day, it is possible to see Glastonbury Tor, the Mendips, Exmoor and Wales. Above the village lies an Iron Age settlement, the Trendle Ring. This has been described as a hill fort but some experts believe that it was merely an animal enclosure. In the village is the Church of St George, dominated by a huge elm tree in its grounds. Part of the church dates from the 12th century and it is a Grade I listed building. Lovers of historical English literature and keen walkers will want to take note that Bicknoller lies on the Coleridge Way. This follows the walks taken by the poet Coleridge and totals some 36 miles of footpath through this picturesque part of Somerset.
