The picturesque village of Allerford lies westwards along the coast road from Minehead, close to the Bristol Channel coastline. It is part of the the Exmoor National Park in Somerset. The park was one of the first British National Parks, being designated back in 1954. In all, the park spans two counties and covers 297 square miles. The village goes back a long way, being mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Alresford – forda de Limesy Mill'. One of the features of the village is the much photographed Packhorse Bridge, an 18th century stone bridge built to allow wool laden donkeys and mules to cross the River Aller. The Old Village School houses the Rural Life Museum. It was a school from 1821 to 1981 but was converted to a museum in 1983. The exhibits are owned by a Charitable Trust. There are three exhibition rooms, the first containing items from local farm and domestic industry. There is also the West Somerset Photographic archive and the Victorian Schoolroom. A shop onsite sells souvenirs and replica Victorian toys while the Old School Kitchen serves refreshments. Other sights to see in Allerford include its charming traditional thatched cottages, a forge and a traditional red telephone box.
