Strathyre is a tranquil Highland village, 8 miles north Callander near Stirling in central Scotland. Lying on the west shore of Loch Lubnaig in the Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Strathyre is an access route to the Highlands and a convenient location to explore the well-known ‘Rob Roy Country’. Strathyre means ‘sheltered winding valley’ a good description with its setting amongst beautiful lochs, scenic mountains and breathtaking surrounding forest. Neighbouring Balquhidder is well-known for Rob Roy’s Grave. The first settlers were crofters and the original few cottages were built in 1700s. Strathyre today is a popular tourist resort for outdoor pursuits, sight-seeing, fishing and climbing with a selection of hills to choose from including the Munro Ben Vorlich. The Rob Roy Walk is a 72 mile walk stretching across the Highlands. The woodlands maintained by the Forestry Commission have miles of marked trails to walk or cycle. Ranger led walks are available to discover the secrets of the forest and wildlife including deer and birds of prey, they have also developed leisure facilities complete with cabins, campsites and amenities beside Loch Lubnaig. There are other hotels, B&B’s and holiday homes in the area. Nearby Loch Earn is a water-sports Centre. Callander has pony-trekking and canoeing.
