Fintry is a small attractive village sitting at the edge of Scotland’s central lowlands situated at the head of the Strathendrick valley high up on the Endrick Water to the north of Glasgow. The settlement in the area dates from c1400’s with the building of Culcreuch Castle, Alexander Spiers bought the castle and built a water-powered cotton mill c1789 and the village developed to serve the mill-workers. Historically interesting features include Culcreuch Castle currently a hotel complete with interesting décor, three resident ghosts and the largest colony of bats in Britain in the roof-space, Dunmore House the former manse was built in 1723, the Parish church dates from 1823 and there is an interesting low Bridge of Gonacahan, nearby lie the ruins of a medieval motte and bailey of the Grahams of Fintry. The pretty village has been the winner of the ‘Best Kept Small Village in Britain’ and ‘Britain in Bloom’ competitions and is a popular tourist destination within easy commuting distance of Falkirk, Stirling and Glasgow and the many attractions they have to offer. Fintry lies at the centre of the Campsie Fell Trail, a popular area for walkers, cyclists and nature-watchers, there are hotels, an inn, a village hall, caravan parks, leisure centre, sports centre and a bowling club.
