The town of Falkirk is a short drive from the north east of Glasgow, and north west of Edinburgh. At the heart of Scotland, its pulse beats with the ebb and flow of the Forth and Clyde, and Union canals. The junction of these waterways was crucial to cementing Falkirk’s reputation as the iron casting capital of Scotland, a reputation forged in the blast furnace of the industrial revolution. Iron and steel, the girders of heavy industry; these formed the buttresses of the town’s economy, and its canals providing an arterial link from the east and west of the country. Nowadays the town has now downed the hammer and donned a sharp suit, as retail and service sectors supplant the steelworks. Falkirk’s past has a resilient charm; the town’s attractions celebrate its hardworking traditions. Callander house has remained resolute through the relentless tide of change in the area. Within the house’s walls, and extensive woodland gardens, history is reanimated with staff the part of clockmakers and grocers. Visitors to Kinneil House can also chart the fortunes of the town, with the nearby Antonine wall a living relic from Roman Times. Making its own history is the engineering marvel that is the Falkirk Wheel; the world’s first rotary boat lift. Joining the town’s canals, the Wheel in action is a unique spectacle, and boat trips down the canals can help visitors understand their importance to the town’s survival. Falkirk itself has a large pedestrianized centre, making it great for shopping. The town is also home to two football teams with polarized fortunes; Falkirk in the Scottish Premier League and East Stirlingshire in the toil of the Scottish Third Division. Cycling enthusiasts can even follow the Union Canal all the way to Edinburgh. If that sounds strenuous, the Wheelhouse restaurant, can replenish energy to those aching limbs.
