Dollar lies at the foot of the Ochill Hills in Clackmannanshire, on the A91, and is less than an hour’s drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is one of the so called ‘Hillfoots’ and is a town whose history has been intertwined with that of Castle Campbell, which sits to its north on Dollar Glen. A foreboding building, befitting its fortress status, Castle Campbell was previously entitled Castle Gloom, a monicker more Bram Stoker than Clackmannanshire. It housed the Campbell Earls of Argyll, and Mary Queen of Scots was amongst the royalty to have stayed there. Dollar itself has seen many changes in its fortunes. Its Hillfoot neighbours adopted textiles as their main industry, while Dollar has mined for coal, lead and copper with varying degrees of success before textiles and tourism became the town’s main industries. With a typically relaxed atmosphere, Dollar is an ideal venue for a quiet break and offers visitors many scenic walks, mountain biking in the Ochill Hills and fishing in the nearby Devon River. Real ale enthusiasts will note that the Harviestoun Brewery was founded in Dollar. The town is also noted for education since the prestigious Dollar Academy was founded in 1818, by shipping magnate John McNabb.
