Bridge-of-Allan is a town in Stirlingshire in Scotland situated on the Allan Water in the wooded countryside below the Ochil Hills three miles north of Stirling. There is evidence of a settlement in the area dating back to the Bronze Age with the cairn of Fairy Knowe on the Hill of Airthrey which was excavated in 1868 revealing two burials, one in a stone cist. The town was a popular spa resort during the Victorian era with the discovery of spring water believed to have health giving properties; regular visitors included authors Robert Louis Stevenson and Charles Dickens. Bridge-of-Allan has fine Victorian villas and buildings and remains a popular tourist resort with hotels and holiday accommodation, a range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. There are a variety of attractions including an 18-hole golf course, a working brewery and visitor centre offering tours and tasting of the traditional ales and beers, a Gallery with paintings, design led crafts and jewellery, a glasswork studio to watch glassware being made, glass blowing and at Christmas the opportunity to blow your own Christmas bauble. An open-top city tour bus operates a hop-on-hop-off audio-tour through Bridge-of-Allan, over the 500 year old Bridge and past the Beheading Stone before heading to the Bannockburn Heritage Centre, Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument and Stirling University with the MacRoberts Arts Centre.
