The town of Wythenshawe in Manchester takes its name from an Anglo Saxon phrase meaning “small wood of withy trees” or “willow wood” so accurately dating the settlement of this village as it once was. Agriculture was the mainstay of the local economy and it once was a peaceful and tranquil place to live. Testament to the original wealth generated here by the agricultural industry remains to be seen today in the form of the illustrious halls that remain, Peel Hall, is one of the oldest buildings dating from around the 14th century whilst Wythenshawe Hall set in its own park is still a major attraction today and then is Sharston Hall and Baguley Hall each with its own story to tell. Today Wythenshawe can still proudly boast that it was the first Garden City in the UK, first suggested in the early part of the 20th century it took the foresight of some very determined people to ensure the success of providing improved housing and amenities for the influx of residents from the more deprived areas around Manchester. This new town was not without fault but was certain was that the housing and limited local amenities were far better than the incoming residents had previously experienced. Today with a wide range of local amenities and facilities it also boasts the Wythenshawe Forum, a major venue for theatre, drama and arts and the area is probably best known as the location for Manchester Airport.
