Worsley village is just north of the City of Manchester and Worsley Village has been designated a Conservation Area to include some 40 listed buildings as examples of historically interesting buildings. The town of Worsley was first mentioned in 1195, when it was passed to Elias de Workesley, but by 1450 the spelling of the name of the town had changed to as we know it today. It was however the canals that were to help Worsley grow, in 1759 an application was made to Parliament for the construction of the first large scale canal in Britain. In conjunction with this was the growth in the industrialization of the area and the rest of England, this combination of events securing the future of Worsley. The development of the railways led to a further increase in the industrial activity in the area and further increases in population. Today Worsley has the appearance of a peaceful village, by passed by much of the heavy traffic that previously blighted the area. The canal today is peaceful although once it was home to plenty of boatbuilders, wheelwrights and nailmakers. It was said that the workers could not hear the clock strike one above the noise and they were always late back to work after lunch. The Duke had the mechanism of the clock altered so that it struck 13 – and today the clock, despite being relocated to St Marks Church, still strikes 13!
