Standish is a small town found in the North West of England in the County of Lancashire, just North of Wigan tracing its history back to around 1178. Its history reflects that of what has happened to many northern towns over the past few centuries, that of a change in economic prosperity from a reliance on agriculture to a growth fired by the enthusiasm of the Industrial Revolution and a rapid growth in the local population all attracted to the area in search of employment and wealth and then a return to more sedate times as the face of industry changed. The industrialization of the area created more housing and local amenities to cope with the increased population however by the 1960’s the mining industry had all but disappeared, the new motorway network by passed the town and through this period of change the town of Standish managed to retain its almost “village” feel. Today the town is noted for its church, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles that are successfully married together to form St Wilfird’s Church dating back to 1205. There is Standish Hall, originally built in 1574, today only remnants remain, much of the old hall having been sold off and shipped to America in the mid 1920’s.
