Some fourteen miles North of Manchester lies the town of Rochdale, former home to Gracie Fields and the former larger than life MP now known as Sir Cyril Smith. Rochdale can trace its historic roots back to the Domesday Book and since medieval times has been an important market town that were held as far back as the 13th Century. By Tudor times the area had a growing reputation for the production of woollen cloth but it was the Industrial Revolution that was to dramatically change the landscape of Rochdale as it embraced the new technology and textile mills were erected. The industrial wealth created meant that Rochdale was growing in importance as an industrial centre and in 1856 the council decided that they would need a new Town Hall. A competition was held and the winning design by William Henry Crossland of Leeds was selected to be erected alongside the River Roch. Today the River Roch runs beneath the town and this magnificent Victorian building is set with gardens on three sides with the parish church towering over it on the steep bank beside. The demise of the cotton industry came about because of cheaper supplies from elsewhere and this left Rochdale with a challenge which it has overcome. Today Rochdale has the Kingsway Business Park to attract a wide range of businesses and it is envisaged that over 7,200 people will be employed here attracting another 1.800 jobs in the next ten to fifteen years. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy some retail therapy in the town centre at either of its two indoor shopping centres and Rochdale has the Rochdale Way a circulatory path of some 50 miles for all to enjoy. Just two minutes from the centre of Rochdale and you will find the bus station whilst the railway station is around a ten minute stroll.
