Heywood lies between Bury and Rochdale and forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale around 10 miles north of Manchester. Heywood is well placed for the North West motorway network allowing access to both the M60 and M66 as well as the A627(M), There is a local rail network - East Lancashire Railways – but this is mainly a tourist attraction running steam and (more recently) diesel services as far as Bury, but only at weekends. For those longer national rail journeys you would need to get to Castleton some 2 miles away from Heywood. The name of Heywood is taken from the Anglo Saxon word for animal enclosure. The Heywood Family can be traced back as far as 1164 when a Peter Heywood was living here. The growth that the town experienced during the boom cotton years was extraordinary, in 1830 Heywood had a population of 3,000 and by 1841 there were 34 cotton mills in the town. Heywood is also known for being one of the first places in which to erect a model village. Joseph Fenton of Bamford Hall founded the village of Hooley Bridge around his cotton mill in 1826, today Hooley Bridge exists as a suburb of Heywood. For the present though the centre of Heywood is the main local shopping area with its own retail park whilst the majority of the shops in the town centre tend to be local suppliers.
