The pace of Denton is mentioned in several 14th century documents, and by the 1660’s it had become a reasonably large village, home to around 500 people. By the 1800’s the population had grown again to around 2,500 and this was now a period of growth for the area, in the next 40 years the population had grown to 7,000 and by the 1950’s the population was over 25,000 and Denton was a suburb of Manchester. By 1974 this was to change and Denton was to become part of the Tameside Metropolitan Council as it is today. The town has continued to grow, due in part to the opening of the motorway network, in particular the M67 and nowadays the Manchester Circulatory M60. The convenience of this motorway network has encouraged modern industry and retail stores to the area, today the town has replaced the early coal mining, hat manufacturing and lead battery industries that once existed in the area and is a successful and growing community. Always striving to improve the town is once again undergoing a period of change, the former Oldham Batteries site has seen approval given for the erection of a new retail park, the town centre has been improved and the level of local amenities for the local residents ensure that this is a popular location in which to live and work.
