The Castlefield area of Manchester evolved from a Roman settlement of AD79. It was after the Romans left that the area became something of a wasteland, and became overgrown. Such was the state of the area that by the Middle Ages it was known locally as “The castle in the Field” - a reference to the earlier Roman fort that was located here. From the mid-eighteenth century it became an area of thriving industry and it boasts Britain's first man made canal — The Bridgewater Canal — and the first passenger railway station, which now houses the Museum of Science and Industry. It was the desire to create within Manchester a forward looking and economically secure city that led to the building of the warehouses and rail network that are today identified with the area. This network of canals, warehouses, railways and viaducts that dominate the landscape of Castlefield are a legacy of the importance of the area during the Industrial Revolution, however, the decline of industry since the 1950s led to the area becoming a derelict and abandoned wasteland in the heart of the city. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that things began to change, the introduction of the Metro being a feature that now makes the centre of Manchester one of the most easily accessible locations from its suburbs.
