It may be one of the island's busiest towns but everything about Yarmouth - its buildings, its waters - is captivating. It's a joy to explore the shops, restaurants and pubs of the central square and the quaint, narrow streets that wander off it, immortalised in the TV series "Rocket To The Moon". A west-coast ferry port, Yarmouth is famous for the dazzling array of yachts and cruisers in and around its harbour. One of the town's most celebrated events is the annual "Old Gaffers" Festival involving more than 100 "gaff-rigged" boats. Standing watch, silently, is the 16th Century Yarmouth Castle, Henry VIII's imposing stone fortress, which houses an exhibition of historical paintings and a picnic area overlooking the Solent. The town's 700-feet wooden pier is ideal for fishing. Anglers may also try their luck on boat trips around the Solent and The Needles. All sorts of cruises are on offer here, from the bird-lovers' Newtown Estuary tour to a round-the-island voyage in the world's last working paddle steamer. Walkers and cyclists, meanwhile, admire the greenery and wildlife of The Causeway, a former railway track leading to Freshwater, while the Hamstead walking trail, southbound across the downs, is exceptionally scenic.
