Shorwell, a countryside village in the south west, is a pretty, quiet little hideaway: the post office is its only shop. Here are found some lovely thatched cottages, three impressive manor houses and a historic church. Northcote Manor, now a hotel, is surrounded by glorious gardens sometimes open to the public. Westcourt Manor, also a hotel, incorporates a farm - as does the private Wolverstone Manor built in honour of Elizabeth 1 for £800. It's said to have its own ghost - possibly not the Queen! The church of St Peter dates back to 1100. Part of a wall and the south door have survived the 1440 remodelling of the building, which is filled with carvings, memorials, monuments, the only church gun-chamber in existence and a 15th Century wall painting of St Christopher. Customers at the village's Crown Inn enjoy an authentic country atmosphere, a log fire in winter and a rear garden complete with a trout stream. It's a welcoming destination for outdoor types who voted it Best Pub For Walkers in a recent Wightlink survey. The downs to the north of Shorwell offer captivating walks. Other activities include clay pigeon shooting at the nearby Cheverton Clay Shooting Ground.
