For breathtaking scenery and olde-world charm, it's hard to beat Shanklin - a town beloved of Keats and Henry Longfellow. Located at the southern end of Sandown Bay, it boasts views over the English Channel and across the bay to the stunning white cliffs of Culver and Yaverland. With Dunnose Point rising majestically behind it, Shanklin beach is an idyllic spot for sunbathers and swimmers. At the seafront there is crazy golf, pitch and putt and a discreet number of children's entertainments. Those in search of big amusement centres are just next door to Shanklin's sister town, the bustling Sandown. A lift takes visitors from the beach to the clifftop, where they are on a level with the main shopping streets. However, it's Old Shanklin Village that really captures the imagination with its narrow road winding through clusters of thatched cottages, pubs, tearooms and curiosity shops. Here, visitors may enter Shanklin Cline, a historic gorge whose pathway leads past waterfalls, woodland and gardens as it descends 109 feet to the beach. Shanklin has cricketing traditions, and it's a great base for walkers. The coastal path to Luccombe is popular, and Shanklin and Wroxall Downs give astonishing views over the island.
