The small village of Gatcombe is the ideal hideaway for visitors seeking rest and relaxation in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Located in the centre of the island and surrounded by farmland, Gatcombe lies in a valley at the foot of the downs' richly wooded hillsides. The village provides an excellent base for exploring the countryside on horseback, by bicycle or on foot. There are great walking opportunities around these parts. Visitors will enjoy a gentle stroll along the bridle path passing the old water mill, or to neighbouring villages such as Chillerton and Rookley. Carisbrooke Castle is less than three miles away. The experienced hiker is spoilt for choice, with a network of routes leading to some of the island's most spectacular coastal scenery. The "Tennyson Trail" is especially popular, ending at Alum Bay in the west. Here, there are wonderful views out over the dramatic sea stacks, The Needles, and the famous multi-coloured sand cliffs. Gatcombe is an unusually tranquil village, without so much as a pub, and the 13th Century church of St Olave adds to the feeling of timelessness. However, shopping and entertainment are close to hand in Newport, the capital town, less than four miles away.
