Kirkcudbright is a historic town with a working harbour in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, situated on the Solway coast on the banks of the River Dee 28 miles south-west of Dumfries. Kirkcudbright was granted Royal Burgh status in 1330. Kirkcudbright, pronounced kir-coo-bree, was named from the ‘Kirk of St Cuthbert’ the town had been an important ecclesial centre with the monastery established in 1000AD. Kirkcudbright is a popular tourist destination complete with shops, a hotel, holiday accommodation and place to eat. The town centre is decorated with a mixture of mediaeval, Georgian and Victorian buildings, historically interesting features include the town wall built c1540, the Town Hall built in 1878-9 and the 17th century Tolbooth, once the Sheriff Court and prison, now houses the Tolbooth Art Centre which features work from Kirkcudbright’s famous artists, a café and gift shop. Other attractions include the 12th century Cistercian Dundrennan Abbey, founded by David I, the ruins of the 16th century tower house MacLellan’s Castle which overlooks the picturesque harbour, the Harbour Cottage Gallery, the Stewartry Museum which dates from 1879 with exhibitions on the history of the Stewartry and Broughton House an 18th century Georgian town house with Japanese style gardens. Nearby the Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park has a varied collection of 200 animals from all over the world.
