Set amongst the unspoiled and tranquil hinterland of south-west Scotland, Dumfries is the largest town in Dumfries And Galloway, and the administrative centre for the region. Regarded as the ‘Queen Of The South’ – its football club shares that name, Dumfries is a settlement of some 30,000-plus residents. The town sprouts forth from the banks of the River Nith, which empties into the pristine Solway Firth. Dumfries And Galloway is an area of some seclusion, making it hugely popular with holidaymakers looking for a quiet getaway in a territory marked by some stunning georgic vistas, lowland hills, beaches, lochs, rivers and forests. Dumfries makes a wonderful base for exploring the surrounding countryside; the area’s hills offer pristine walks, graced by host of wildlife. Deer, falcons, eagles and buzzards all call this area home. Dumfries is easily found via the A74(M), and has historically been on the receiving end from a number of less than friendly invasions from the English: who from 1300 to the 17th century, visited Dumfries more in the guise of conquistadors than tourists. As with many quaint Scottish towns, the sleepy surroundings mask a bloody history. Dumfries’ most significant and dramatic vignette in Scotland’s past was Robert The Bruce’s murder of John Comyn, in the old Greyfriars Church. Comyn was a prominent supporter of King John Balliol, who’s return would have damaged Bruce’s ambitions of ascension to the Scottish throne. Comyn’s murder caused outrage amongst Scottish lords and the church, who excommunicated Bruce for an act of bloodshed in a place of worship. It also made him a sworn enemy of one of Scotland’s most powerful families. The new Greyfriars was built in 1868, and today looks across to a statue of Scotland’s other famous Robert; the poet Robert Burns. Although born in Ayr, Burns spent his final days in Dumfries and his remains rest in the mausoleum at St Michael’s Churchyard. The Robert Burns Centre can be found in the 18th century watermill, on the Nith’s west bank, and is a splendid hive of information about Burns and the Dumfries And Galloway area. In the windmill’s tower, Dumfries Museum exhibits some artifacts ranging from the prehistoric to the contemporary; visitors can learn about the wildlife of the Solway salt marches, the history of curling, stone carvings of early Christians, and Victorian farming. There is also a camera obscura observatory that offers panoramic views of Dumfries and countryside that fringes it. Dumfries’ oldest house, Old Bridge House, was built in 1660 and its structure is built into the 15th century Devorgilla bridge. The bridge, resplendent with six bold arches, looks great for its age, and was named after the Lady Of Galloway, the mother of King John Balliol no less. Whether you have blue blood, or are just interested in discovering Scottish history firsthand, Dumfries has a most regal appeal, with lush rural landscapes that could almost be considered palatial.
