Pembrey in Carmarthenshire is located between Burry Port and Kidwelly overlooking Carmarthen Bay. Its population of approx 4000 residents is swollen by summer visitors, nature lovers and motor sports enthusiasts. Pembrey was a thriving port in the C18th & C19th but the old harbour was abandoned for Pembrey New Harbour later re-named Burry Port. This area has longstanding military links. In the 1960’s an attempt to set up a munitions testing range was foiled due to local objections. The site was instead developed as Pembrey Country Park which has spectacular views and an abundance of wildlife. However, the remains of the bunkers from the old Royal Ordnance Factory are still visible and provide interest to military historians and ghost hunters alike. Similarly, a former RAF airfield now forms the Pembrey Circuit – home of welsh motor sport. Often used as a testing site as well as hosting a variety of race events, it attracts many excited fans each year. Pembrey also has a small private airport used by members of the local flying club and for chartered flights within the U.K and Europe. A range of charming local accommodation is available .The Ashburnham Hotel or the Pembrey Arms are typical examples.
