Trefriw lies 8 miles S of Conwy (B5106). This lovely, small village is a good base from which to explore Snowdonia but itself has many attractions. Traditional Welsh bedspreads, tweeds and travelling rugs are manufactured at Trefriw Woollen Mill (continuously in operation since the 1830’s) The hydroelectric mill is powered by the water of the local lakes Crafnant and Geirionedd which are well worth exploring, as is the footpath above which leads to Fairy Falls - site of a C19th forge. For lovers of fine waters a visit to Trefriw Wells Spa is essential. Originating in Roman times, revitalised and in use today, you can still sample the iron-enriched waters. If a hot drink is more to your taste, visit the tearoom and also the spa beauty shop. - Trefriw was once one of the homes of Prince Llewelyn the Great who is reputed to have built the local church at his wife’s request. ( not from extreme piety but to save her the steep climb to Llanrhychyrn.) Accomodation in this area is plentiful but for something special, stay at nearby Gwydir Castle Hotel – a fine example of a Tudor courtyard house - but do watch out for ghosts !
