Pwllheli is located on the Llyn Peninsula, much of which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in North West Wales on the edge of Cardigan Bay where it enjoys a mild climate and relishes in the title as the unofficial capital of the Llyn Peninsula. Sitting on the convergence of two rivers, the Erch and Rhyd-Hir it is no wonder that part of the towns history is intertwined with shipping. The harbour was established in the 18th century and whilst it was a subsidiary port to Beaumaris it was able to accommodate ships up to 60 tons and was always busy. Today the harbour is filled with yachts, boasting one of Wales’ best marinas with moorings for up to 400 boats and from here enthusiasts sail Cardigan Bay with its fantastic views of the Snowdonia mountains, to Anglesey or to Ireland. Pwllheli is an ideal base to explore this area, as well as nearby Snowdonia, Anglesey and the western coast of Wales the town centre provides a wide range of traditional and local stores to cater for most needs, indeed it was historically a market town and today it still plays host to regular weekly markets. Many of the buildings in Pwllheli are also listed, including the Old Workhouse, The Penlan Fawr, Whitehall and The Old Town Hall and a stroll around the town will prove quite rewarding. Pwllheli is popular with both residents and visitors, there is the sailing club, the rugby club or the golf club - where the clubhouse has the distinction of being the closest to sea in the UK. There are two main beaches, South Beach with its Blue Flag award, or the Glan-y-Mor, if you prefer swimming in the clear clean waters then South Beach should be your first choice as Glan-y-Mor is towards the rear of the marina by the workshops and compounds although it does improve further along the beach. In short Pwllheli offers a wide variety of attractions however with Snowdonia being so close it is easy to understand why families enjoy this popular resort as they can get both the benefit of the sea or the mountains providing for a truly varied holiday.
