The old market town of Mold is to be found in North East Wales in the County of Flintshire and is able to boast a powerful history. At the top of the town is Bailey Hill, a reminder of the Normans who once visited the town, and which today rewards the visitor with some great views of the town. Mold is the English name for this market town whilst the Welsh name is “Yr Wyddgrug” which means “heap, tomb or memorial” and it is believed that this is a direct reference to Bailey Hill. Bailey Hill has a reputation as the scene of a number of battles before the Edwardian conquest of Wales. The last Norman lord died in 1329 and the castle continually changed hands – usually to those involved in the politics of the area. The coming of the Tudors brought a peaceful era, with the exception of the Civil War, however Mold was to remain relatively peaceful until the 19th century when coal was mined in the area leading to an influx of newcomers. The closing stages of the 19th century saw the coal and lead mining in the area coming to an end and after the First World War it had all but ceased. In 1836 one Daniel Owen was born here in Mold and it is said that he was Wales’ first great novelist – today in his honour Mold has the Daniel Owen Centre, a complex that includes shopping, library and community centre together with a statue of the man close by. Today Mold is very much a popular market town, every Wednesday the main High Street is closed off for the event which attracts people form all over the area. Road access to Chester and other North West cities make this a popular location for those who enjoy the quiet that Mold can offer and yet who need to have easy access to these cities for work. The area around Mold offers some of the best countryside for ramblers and mountain bikers which accounts for its continuing popularity.
