To many people the best of the North Wales coastal towns is Llandudno, if you approach the town from Penrhyn Bay the road (A546) offers a spectacular view of the bay and shoreline, known as the North Shore, stretching away from you in a perfect crescent, in the distance stretching out to sea is the famous pier and towering over it is The Great Orme with its tramway which on its route to the top provides panoramic views. If you prefer a more modern method of transport then there is the Alpine Lift in Happy Valley, a listed public park dedicated to Llandudno by Lord Mostyn in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Llandudno was originally founded by St Tudno who established a church in the area in the 6th century, today the location of the church remains the same, resting against the Great Orme and overlooking the sea it is easy to understand why he chose this place for his church. To reach the church you can take the Marine Drive which hugs the absolute edge of the coastline, if you prefer to relax then there is a vintage coach that can take you around the perimeter of the Great Orme. It wasn’t until the 18th century though that Llandudno began to capitalise on its location, the coming of the railways brought greater numbers of tourists to the area to “take the sea air” or to stroll along the sweeping promenade or indeed admire and amble along the Victorian pier which was built in 1878 – and was used as the staging point for steam boat trips to the Isle of Man much as it is today. The Victorian influence is hard to ignore – the hotels that overlook the promenade are a legacy to that era, whilst the town centre, carefully planned by the Victorians and today some of the shops echo that past. Every Spring there is the Victorian Extravaganza held every May Bank Holiday and features a parade of vintage vehicles. Llandudno is also a great place to use as a base for exploring the rest of North Wales but with such a wide variety of things to do and see it seems unlikely that you would want miss out on what is happening in Llandudno.
