Inland on the A55 many people speed through Bodelwyddan without realising it. Located in North Wales and today bypassed by the A55 you may just notice the Marble Church or indeed a castle on the opposite side of the road. Bodelwyddan Castle was in fact constructed on the site of an earlier building dating back to around 1460 – its present form a creation of Sir John Hay Williams who used architects Hansom and Welch to design and produce what is there today. There is an army camp nearby and during the First World War the castle was used as a recuperation hospital. In 1920 the property was sold and became a private school for young girls – Lowther College – and it remained so until 1982 when financial problems forced its closure and it was purchased by the Council and transformed into an historic house, museum and gallery that it is today. The Marble Church was built in 1856 and consecrated in 1860, today it remains a gleaming reminder to Lady Willoughby de Broke in memory of her husband. Today Bodelwyddan is made up of a housing estate, a small industrial estate, Kinmel Army Training Camp and Ysbty Glan Clwyd – one of the largest hospitals in North Wales with around 2,500 staff.
