Bangor today is a modern city with its university but its history can be traced back to 525AD when a Celtic missionary first established a monastic community on the present site of the cathedral. It continued life as a small hamlet with little expansion however there were two factors which were to dramatically change Bangor in the 1700’s – road communication and the development of the nearby slate quarries. Communication from London to Ireland went through Chester and Conwy around Penmaenmawr and across the Menai Straits and on to Holyhead but this part of the trip, across the Menai Straits were the most dangerous and because of this danger that route was abandoned in favour of Bangor and the Portaethwy Ferry and now Bangor found itself on the main route between London and Holyhead. The first slate quarries at Bethesda helped the growth of Bangor as a quay was developed at Port Penrhyn with a rail link to them to help transport the slate to distant markets. As with all industrial developments the area soon benefited from the growth of related industries, writingslate manufacture, sawmill and a foundry was established and shipbuilding also became an important industry. In 1822 there was a steam packet service between Liverpool and Bangor and this also brought the first tourists to the area and tourism continues today in this popular resort. In 1862 Bangor became the centre for Higher Education in North Wales with the establishment of the Normal College and this, since its inauguration, developed into the University for North Wales which opened its doors in 1884 on the site of a former coaching inn. From such humble beginnings the university today is home to around 10,000 students and 2,000 staff The University of Wales, Bangor is still providing teaching and research of the highest quality. A truly cosmopolitan city with its cathedral, its restored Victorian pier and student life – at the last census it was noted that the population of Bangor was 13,550 whilst the student population was 7,700! It may be one of the smallest cities in the UK but located on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, on the edge of the Menai Straits it is understandable why so many people find this such a popular location.
