Aberdovey (Aberdyfi in Welsh ) is a thriving harbout resort located where the River Dovey meets Cardigan Bay within the Snowdonia National Park. Founded on shipbuilding , this is still a place with the sea as its heart. Renowned for watersports, everything from sea-kayaking or longboat racing to coasteering is available . The award winning beaches provide fabulous conditions for kite-surfing and there is an 18 hole championship golf course for landlubbers. This is a place for a countryside enthusiast . Cadr Idris and the Aran Fawddwy mountain ranges are close - a coffee or ice-cream stop by Talyllyn lake is a must! Also check out the Forest Enterprise centre at Coed –y-Brennin. For the eco-conscious, bicycles can be hired from Bryncrug or visit the World Centre for Alternative Technology at Macnynlleth for more planet saving ideas. The first ever Outward Bound Centre was founded here, in 1941 by Kurt Hahn and Lawrence Holt as a sea school emphasising personal development. It remains a core centre for sailing and water sports. There are numerous local hotels, guest houses and campsites including caravans and chalets. The Talyllyn steam railway starts from Tywyn four miles north.and runs inland through the beautiful Dolgoch Ravine which incorporates the Dolgoch waterfalls. There is a small station - so hop off to explore on foot - even stay at the Dolgoch Falls Hotel nestling at the foot of the ravine. For rock fans, in both the geological and musical senses, this is a place of pilgrimage. Led Zepplin have many links here – According to Pauline Brown from Aberystwyth one of their biggest fans, the video for “No Quarter” was located here in1997 and Robert Plant was also seen here waving the Welsh flag in the film “The Song Remains the Same.” Aberdovey is well worth singing about.
